Mine don't scratch the furniture, but that's after some training, plus the fact that they are free to roam inside and out of the house, which means they have plenty of places outside the house to scratch (I once catched one of them scratching a live cow of all things!). The way I see it is that if I can teach my dog not to chew my shoes, and teach a hamster to crap in a specific corner, I can teach a cat not to scratch inside the house, as well as respond to vocal commands.
