I tried teaching a cat where to scratch once, and failed miserably. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Certainly that's the first thing you try, it's just that some folks will then get rid of the pet if that doesn't work. Seems to me having a declawed cat with a home is better than a clawed cat in a shelter or on the streets. A Hobson's choice, perhaps...
