| Senior Member | Keep in mind he lives about 150 feet from this courthouse. I got this letter today: "Watch for an upcoming news story about a gunfight at the Smith County Courthouse here in Tyler. I saw it. I saw two or more officers get shot. One probably fatally. Many others get pinned inside the courthouse. I saw the gunman escape in a maroon truck. North on Spring street. I live on Spring Street about 30 yards from the crime scene. I saw people screaming and crying and hiding and running. I saw one man with what looked like an AK-47 fire again and again (semi-automatic) into the Smith County courthouse. I did some hiding myself. I saw either an off-duty officer or a civilian hero-wannabe sneak around behind the gunman and miss with a pistol from two feet away. I saw him get shot in the chest and then, again in the head when he was down. Two bullets - efficient; almost professional. The gunman was eerily calm - like a hunter shooting squirrels. He was more with-it and together and scarily efficient than any of the professional cops. I saw him look my way. My neighbor ran into her apartment. I ducked under the stairs. The guy dismissed me instantly as a non-threat/non-target. When he drove off I went to see if I could help the guy who was down. I saw brains leaking from a headwound (temple) from four feet away. It was too late. The ambulance didn't even waste any time on him. He is still lying dead in front of Levines, behind the courthouse, as I write this. Another cop is lying probably dead on the grass behind the courthouse, across the street from Levines. Another cop was moving around in pain, in the fetal position with other cops checking on him - also on the grass behind the courthouse across the street from Levines. That street is Spring Street. I live on Spring Street. I saw it. I cannot articulate what I am feeling. It is not terror or dread but it has the flavor of fear. I am not crying but it has the flavor of anguish. I am not exactly enraged but it has the flavor of anger. The adrenaline has me shaking. I have to go to work in one hour - unless my door is knocked on by a detective interviewing witnesses. I am not the only witness, not by a long shot. They may not call on me. That would be just fine. If they do call on me - I would not be a good witness. I have described everything I can remember in this email. I do not know what else to say."

| Patrons | I take it your friend lives in a quiet little town where things like this are a major shock... well if you're friend ever wants to see some real action have him come to my neighborhood (da' hood) for a month or so... he'll get to see all kinds of shootings, drug deals, prostitution, gang fights... you name it, it's here. If a day goes by without something happening it's a scary day.
