Default ST5 Redux (Again)

So I guess I decided I'm finally going to finish this.

Here's a list of what I'm going to do. This project requires more planning than "Phobos" or the ill-fated "Hold the Line" (sorry, Bean). This is a list of not just new stuff I'm making, but of edits I'll make to the movie itself.

-Slightly re-edited opening, with a couple of new sound effects.
-New title sequence: We move up through the atmosphere of Nimbus III, into space, and then through space to Earth.
-New shot of Kirk falling
-New shot of Spock flying downward to save him
-New shot of the spacedock during Scotty's log
-New shot of the Enterprise in spacedock
-New shot of the shuttle leaving the park
-New shot of the shuttle approaching the Enterprise
-New shot of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey decloaking
-New shot(s) of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey destroying the old Earth probe
-New shot of the Enterprise arriving in orbit of Nimbus III
-New shot of the shuttle approaching Nimbus III
-New shot of the shuttle landing in the desert at night
-New shot of the shuttle approaching the Enterprise at Nimbus III
-New shot of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey decloaking
-New shot of the shuttle rushing toward the Enterprise at Nimbus III
-New shot of the Enterprise going to warp, evading the Klingon torpedo
-New shot(s) of the Enterprise at warp
-Re-editing of the turboshaft sequence to avoid silliness
-Re-editing of Scotty's head injury and sickbay scene (ie: removal)
-New shot of the Enterprise approaching the Great Barrier
-New shot of the Enterprise inside the Great Barrier
-New shot of the Barrier Planet
-New shot of the shuttle landing on the Barrier Planet
-New shot of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey decloaking in the barrier
-New shot of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey firing on the Enterprise
-New shot of the RockMan coming out of the ground
-New shot of the RockMan tearing up the shuttle
-New shot of the RockMan chasing Kirk up the hill
-New shot of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey entering the atmosphere
-New shot of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey destroying the RockMan
-New shot of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey and the Enterprise leaving the Barrier

It's mostly new stuff, not much in terms of cutting things out, really. I've always felt the movie was better than people give it credit for. It is well-edited (in terms of creating drama and tension - the film's action sequences are pretty damn good). It has a great score, and some wonderful performances from the cast. I might trim some of the more ridiculous humorous moments (like Scotty hitting his head). The real problem with the movie is that the ending falls apart. Thematically, it's fine - the stuff where Kirk thought he was going to die because he was alone, but he never really was. That's all well and good, but the fact is that you have Kirk running from what is essentially Amorphous Energy Blob #32 that was hastily added to footage they had shot for something else entirely.

My edits might be a little rough, too, that's to be expected. But I'm hoping to get a bit more fuller flick out of it. The special effects as they exist get worse and worse as the movie goes on as the company was running out of time and money. I'm looking to create a set of consistent (and, hopefully) better effects for the movie.

I'll post progress in this thread, and everyone is welcome to make suggestions and comments as they see fit.

Can you edit out the part right after the paramount logo, up until the end credits. That would improve the movie tremendously.

Just kidding, I think you are right on target with your list. I'll think of more, but basically my thoughts are everything with the energy blob should be redone...yeccch.

Also, the Uhura fan dance...dumb. Also the shuttle emergency landing into the cargo net...lame...can we improve that???

I don't think I can take out the fan dance, because then you have to wonder how Kirk and Spock and company got those disguises and horses when they ride into Paradise City. I'd like to, since it's really not all that great. I mean, if this flick were rated R and Nichelle Nichols was about ten years younger, it'd be awesome, but...

As for the cargo net, I've always liked that, actually. The shuttle crash is one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

The energy blob will be gone, I swear. The only time you'll see it is when Kirk and the others are talking to it and they still think it's "God".

How about the part where the over the hill actor decides that he can be a writer and director? I could really do without that part

Actually, to tell the truth TFF was one of the better movies IMHO. It suffered from a tug of war between Shatner and the studio, and lame SFX. The only scene in the movie that I think was truly stupid was the above mentioned fan dance. Well, the Klingon captain apologizing was well beyond credible as well...

Yup, the Klingon Captain should have been killed by Wendy O Williams...a nice swift ba'atleth slice through the torso...he was a candy ass that Klingon...reminded me of a singer from the band Poison with that hair

Maybe I'll cut just the line where he says, "I......... apologize" and leave in "The attack on your vessel was not sanctioned by my government." That might make it a little bit more bearable.

Absolutlely. It would seem to make more sense given thenature of Klingon pride. He'd be doing his duty by following his superior officers orders, but still keeping his pride intact by not looking like a bithc in front of his crew.

So how long do you figure this'll take you? A year? Less? I'm not being a smart ass either just wondering. It seems like alot of work.

I'm hoping on "less than a year", actually. I've got some of the shots done already. Space shots don't take that long, and there aren't too many in the movie.

What will take a long time is the stuff with the RockMan, since I have to first BUILD it, and then character animation is much more complex and takes much more time than space shots. I'm probably expecting to have all the space shots done in a few weeks, but the RockMan will take considerably longer.

I got some screenshots from the movie and tested out the new color scheme I'm planning on implementing to go along with my new effects shots.
