Cool struggling through a 3d program

This is mainly for Brikar who I know has done a fair bit of 3d modeling.

I've just downloaded BLENDER. It's free, it's GNU, and it's hard as hell to figure out. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with it. It looks to be similar to Lightwave and others like that, if I ever get beyond making a textured sphere, I'll post some results here.

Is anyone else still creating any art?

I'm still using Lightwave, but I've done very little modelling - I have a hard time grasping that. It doesn't come easy. What I have modelled is... amateur to say the least. Animation comes much more naturally to me. Sometimes the attitude modellers have online bothers me. They're all, "Why don't you model it yourself instead of asking me for help?" Well, when was the last time the movie director made all his own models? Who says he can? Sure, some of them, like Jim Cameron, came out of being a model maker... but not too many others can make that claim.

Anyway, rant over... I've never used Blender, but I will say that LW was ridiculously hard to figure out. It took a long time before I was able to render out anything that looked even halfway decent. And I still cringe at most of my own efforts for a few hours before getting a shot right.

Yeah, since I've gotten my new machine, I've been checking out all the free graphic programs that are online.

do you know of a free equivelant of photoshop? I've used pixia and gimp, and they both have limitations.

I'll be checking out the freeware Bryce d/l, I had the location of a human modeling freeware d/l, but I'm hunting for it now that I've forgotten its name.

I know it sounds lame, but this pc is the first i've owned with a cd/dvd burner. These programs don't have to live on my h/d anymore, hooray!

btw, could you please tell me what that avatar pic is?

An Avatar in it's simplest form is the pic associated with your username, such as the pic you have of a man bumping his head. On a more sophisticated level, it can be an online graphic representative of you or a computer-based construct. That virtual babe who reads the news on Anova is also an avatar. They are becoming more and more popular for things like instant messaging. I believe that there are a number that appear to read out what you have typed.

LOL, no Gitch, I mean what is that angry muppet that he uses for his avatar from.

Dude, you're either slipping... or you're bumping up your post count

My avatar is a screenshot from the ANGEL episode "Smile Time", where Angel is turned into a muppet as he and the rest of the gang investigate a haunted children's show that's literally sucking the life out of its audience.

If you find the human modelling program again, let me know. I'd be interested in checking that out.

Hmm... I'd be more interested if it could do more than "create my own Anime dream girl", but it might be worth checking out to get an idea of the basics. Thanks, Des.

the free download offers expire on the first of September. I have the Victoria base kit, and I'll be grabbing the anime portion in a few hours. Once I find all the free downloads, I'll compile them all onto a disk and use the program as I wish. But the free downloads end tomorrow. Apparently they offer different free stuff from time to time.

I just completed a scene with a forest fairy, it looks awful and I haven't figured out how to take my rendered scene and make it a jpeg yet. I haven't figured out how to give her hair that looks good either, but the possibilities are there for some interesting stuff.

I would suggest that anyone interested in playing with this program, even mildly, should download it now.
