| Astro-Monkey | I'm not an artist, so I was suprised when I started sketching this last week. I was sitting in front of a television, trying to write out some ideas, when I just started drawing. Like I said, I'm no artist. I can't picture things in my mind, which makes it hard for me to draw them. The eyebrows are too high, and the nose is off a bit (was never any good at noses), but I'm suprised how well it turned out. Especially since I didn't plan any of it. (yeah, it's not sci-fi, but I had fun with it!)

![]() | It's not bad, for someone who claims not to be an artist.

Not to get off on a rant here....but there's a difference between "art" and "hand to eye coordination". All too often people confuse the latter for the former. They're not the same. Technical skill is not neccesarily "art" (though in the strictest sense, it can be considered an art in and of itself) Far too often people will say "I'm not an artist" but that's a load of shit. I hate that people think that. The moment pencil (or whatever) is put to paper, it's art. Too many people get caught up in trying to draw something in what society has conditioned to think of as "art", and failing that, feel they're not an artist. Get past that line of thinking, and you'll feel alot more confident in creating and expressing yourself. If only others could do that as well, few do. Some of the great artists did, like Picasso, etc. What pisses me off even MORE is that too many "artists" propagate this mindset. They paint a red circle on a white background and call it "art" while dissing the work of someone else. Mainly so they can fullfill their stuck up, elitist mindset that allows them to feel special, like they can do something that few can, when the reality of it is.......ANYONE can be an "artist". Like you Vis, I have a hard time seeing in my mind whatever is I do. 99.999 percent of my work just starts off with me and a pencil scribbling shit and seeing where it goes. I have more of "feel" I'm looking for, than the finished image. If that's accomplished, then the whatever comes out works. My brother once tried to explain to his art teacher that I didn't visualize my work before hand and she said it's impossible. It's not. All of my work at Booze! is a testament to that. The AB image that I did with me, the Beaver and Barkeep....I didn't know anything other than I wanted a certain style. Everything else was just stuff in my head like "I need Barkeep in there somewhere, doing something". In addition, in terms of comics, I once saw a comic that was just two DOTS talking to each other. Obviously, the writing had to be strong to pull that off, but I've seen some unique stuff that has helped me with my own work, in terms of getting over my feelings of "this isn't good enough". Not that these works are "bad", just that they had a unique style to them that worked and was off the beaten path. Check out this link This is one of the books that helped me get the confidence to finally get my own shit out there. It has a totally unique style that can be passed off as "unartistic", but it isn't. It's a kick ass style that works for the book that its' in. And if I recall right, the chick who does this book has had shows at galleries for her stuff. Though I havn't seen that work and assume it's similar to this. This is the kind of stuff that makes me glad to read comics, stuff that's just so cool and unique and personal in style. So, just let go, do your thing and fuck whatever society at large has established as "art", cuz that's really just popular sentiment for whatever style happens to be trendy at the moment. Keep drawing!

Honestly, I can do both, but I always feel more satisified after just letting it flow out, so if I draw a line on a piece of paper for no reason, and it eventually forms a face, where I've nailed the shading etc. but if I work off something I've planned out in my head it usually doesn't turn out exactly like i wanted it so I get pissed off and hate it. Same goes when I make music, If I just make something up on the spot, then I love what I've come up with, it's totally original and random, but when I sit down with my geetar and say "I'm gonna write a song" it never works, but the problem is that I usually come up with shit when I'm taking the dog for a walk or something, where my mind gets to wander, so I rarely get the oppourtunity to record my ideas on the spot, which is frustrating, since I can never remember the ideas after, even though I could have made up a whole song on the spot. My biggest problem is producing stuff that isn't forced, because when I sit down and try and kick some riffs and lyrics around, they end up being forced and dull. Sorry for babbling, but music is the one thing I am truly passionate about.

I do actually consider myself an artist. I'm a writer, and I spent almost 8 years of my life studying/playing music. And, a significant part of my High School life was devoted to ACSII art. I'm just not all that experienced with pencil sketches. ![]()
