I know about the patent issue with GIF (I believe it expired, though...). I know PNG doesn't animate. Beyond that, I have no idea what the difference is. I've been using PNG for a while, as I've thought they were the superior technology. But, tonight I think I've discovered that the GIF compression is better. Is it? Is there an advantage to one over the other (assuming I don't care about animation...which I really don't)?

Yes, I believe it has to do with the compression of the image. Although exactly how...I don't know. I could say that I know the answer and proclaim myself to be Mr. Know-it-all, but I would have gotten my answer from the link below:

I thought PNG had better compression, but Underdog was too big as a PNG, but when I converted him to a GIF, he decreased in size by over half! (11.3kb -> 4.6kb)

I was shocked and amazed. And I'm using him on other forums now.

I could have told you that. Why do you think most images on the web are either gif or jpeg? Although I thought itwas weird that when I made the solaris forum logo, it was bigger as a gif than a jpeg for some reason.

GIF has a little better compression, but it also drops the image to 256 colours max. So its actually going to be the colour density that determines how small you can shrink an image.
