In an apparent attempt to lure p2p users away from the dark side, a new website (apparently from the MPAA) has been established to educate p2p users of their evil ways.

http://www.respectcopyrights.org

Of course, copyright law in America is completely broken; Disney thinks that the Public Domain (which is where they made most of their money) shouldn't exist and the MPAA/RIAA think that digital works should be lisensed rather than purchased (and subject to their TOS).

And this website made me laugh. They say that copying is bad when what they mean to say is copying & redistributing is bad. If I own a CD, I have the right to make a backup. That's called fair use. But, they make the following claim:

Quote:
For example, if Irene makes a photocopy of a book, she has made a copy. That violates the right of the author of the book. She deserves to get paid for each copy. If Dennis downloads an MP3 file of a commercially recorded song from the Internet without paying for it, he makes a copy - that violates copyrights in the musical work. The musical artist deserves to get paid for each copy of his song that is made.
The artist does not need to get paid for the MP3 copy of his/her CD that I place on my iPod.

It's stupid tactics like that this encourage p2p.

Network users have a back door to your hard drive while you're online, thereby seeing your personal, private information, such as bank records, social security number, etc.

Well, if you're stupid enough keep that kind of info on your PC without a firewall, you deserve it.

*sigh* Like anyone would care enough to fire you from your job, let alone fine you 250 grand.

Well then, next time I do poorly on a paper, I can tell the professor that I wasn't allowed to photocopy an article I needed because that would violate the fucking copyright law.

Acctually, I use p2p for good sometimes. A lady who lives down the road from me does a yearly musical play, as well as little comedy skits with some kids from the village, and they compete in the Eisteddfod (usually reach the finals, too). Guess who gets them the appropriate music and sound effects, and guess where he gets them from.

Yeah, she had me looking for fucking jazz and chinese music this year, I ended up with loads of shit like Kenny G on my hard drive uke:

s'funny, cuz if there wonderful statement was true.. then mp3 players would be graymarket and unable to be sold in makjor franchises (future shop, radio shack, etc). It's kinda nice to see that a site specifically made to inform people of rules can't even write them correctly. Kinda reminds me of that old joke of two monks who're re-writing some of the scriptures and somesuch. The younger of the two looks puzzled, it seems a few words have gotten smudged on the parchement he is copying from. So he heads down to the archives to find the originals to double check what he was writing. The older monk continues his work for some time until he hears a scream from below. He rushes downstairs to find the younger monk crying on his knees in front of parchment. The Younger monk looks up with tears streaming down his face. "We were wrong!" he said" "The scriptures said celebRate!"
