| Astro-Monkey | According to my sig, change is coming. ![]() I'm not telling what that change is, but there may be new forum software installed. Or, there may not be. It all depends on what you guys say. The change itself will integrate this forum into a larger site. Again, depending on what you guys say, the larger site may be an "out of the box" site, or it may be something that I hand-code myself. I've been evaluating the "out of the box" software for a while now, and I'm not sure I'm happy with the way it integrates the forum with the rest of the site. The other downside to the "out of the box" software is that it's easily hacked. The upside is that it's less work for me (although I'd probably do something anyway for my site). If I do hand-code the software, would you want threaded posts ala Trekweb and/or Slashdot? Or posts like these? What features would you like? The downside to a new system would be that I couldn't guarantee that the posts in this forum would remain intact at the new place. These are options that I'm floating out to the board. I can't make any guarantees at this point in time, but I will let you know what's going on when I get to that stage. Please comment below. Thanks.

| Religious Fanatic | If you were to build a system like Slashdot or TrekWeb, wouldn't you be able to use one of them as a foundation for a more customized board? I know Slashdot's is open source. I would like a system like that, except with maybe additional features that come with out of the box software, like the ability to click on a smiley to get a smiley, and Highlight text and click a button to use tags. BUT, I also don't want to put you out if you'd rather not do so much work, I'm still feeling guilty after getting Steve to change the TrekWeb board software, even though he seems perfectly willing to do it.

| Astro-Monkey | It's not that much of a problem. I'm building my own personal site, and I was going to do a custom back-end, so this would be a good opportunity to beta test it. Slash actually lacks a forum; one of my problems with some of the "out of a box" websites is that the forum integration is crap, usually because the forum is an afterthought or a separate module. And then there's the fact that I'm not 100% happy with this software, either. EDIT: My only problem might come if I actually get a job. ![]()

| Religious Fanatic | Yeah, that's one of the issues with them really, and is probably a contributor to why TrekWeb is so popular, TrekToday etc. have to open threads to discuss news, where as on Trekweb you can just scroll down. It's certainly what originally got me hooked on it. At first I stayed on the story comments, as I was looking forward to Enterprise and Nemesis at the time, but I got bored there because the discussions rarely continued for more than a couple of days.

![]() | I think that Slashdot's basic format is nearly identical to TrekWeb's (or is it the other way around?) It's just that on TW you can post a thread and on Slash it's in the form of an article which is then linked to comments. The slash code seems pretty cool to me, and is modifiable. Not sure about support, but if it's GNU and so many websites use the code, I'm pretty sure it has support. |

There are some Slash commenting features that I like. There are some (like rating posts) that I feel would be completely unnecessary in an environment like this. And there are some things that I just wish all forums would have. ![]() So, should I believe that most of you don't care what the board is run on?

| Religious Fanatic | I'm pretty sure Jason ripped off the Slash code, he's a frequent visitor there, and was quite reluctant to mod the software, thank god steve seems to have learned how. The board runs much more effieciently with Steve in total control.

| The Awesome One | I didn't realize that Slashdot and TW were so similar. If Jason DID just use their code, that would explain a great many things.
