![]() | I think that Google will ultimately cut deeply into MicroSoft's market share. Longevity is the one factor that will likely ensure success. I'm curious to see what Google ultimately comes up with. Google looks to be lining up their resources for a full frontal assault on the status quo of operating systems and our perceptions of them and what they can do. http://www.kottke.org/04/04/google-operating-system http://beta.news.com.com/2100-1012-5877197.html Last edited by Deslok; 09-26-2005 at 11:53 PM. |

![]() | Hmmm. I'm a little uncomfortable with the amount of access to my PC that this would require me to surrender. If massive chunks of the OS are to be hosted remotely, then huge amounts of data will be shuttled betwen my PC and Google, processed by Google, then shipped back. Quite aside from speed issues (how can that possibly be as quick as shuttling the data 10 millimitres over optical links except for academic sized computing operatins, for which the GRID and INTERNET2 already exists?), the opportunities for an inventive hacker are terrifying. At present my Firewall closes almost all ports and monitors the remainder for suspicious activity. How will future firewalls work? If you will instead be downloading kernels for your PC to run, how is that different from running a base installation of Linux (or even future versions of Windows) and downloading new features when needed? If these rumours are true, then what they are planning is either beyond my admittedly limited imagination, or is destined to die an early death I fear.

![]() | Google is warming up for something big, that much is evident. They're constantly developing new products like google talk, gmail, etc. It seems that if they're building a new OS, it's specifically for the high speed connection era, with the option to essentially store much of your needs to be stored remotely. If succesful, they'd be in charge of a huge database of raw data. I'd like to see somthing other than MS shake up the marketplace a little, but at what cost I wonder? http://google.blogspace.com/ We're going to be a very computer dependent society soon. |
