Default Sony to cripple the PS3?

Link

Quote:
Sony has filed for a patent for a technology to tether a video-game to a console so that you can't sell it, loan it out, play it on a new console after your existing one is stolen or damaged, etc. Some speculate that this is intended for use with the PS3, but wherever it's deployed, it's very consistent with Sony's ongoing contempt for its customers.
Would you buy a video game system that only allowed you to play your games on the first console you stuck it in?

So, like, if I wanted to play my game over at my buddy's house...

And wouldn't that kind of shit just encourage hackers and modders?

Honestly, I don't think this move would be within the bounds of the law. Consumers have rights, after all.

I think that this move will only hurt Sony. I was going to get the PS3 and XBOX 360 this winter, guess I'll save money by not buying the PS3. I'm certainly not going to contribute to their misguided attempts at restricting how people use the console.

The smart thing to do would be to make the console more accessable to all users, like enabling a LAN setup without requiring two copies of the game to be played. Oh well, Nintendo will survive, XBOX will survive, PS3 may not.

Modders can be a video game company's best friend. I've been playing Command & Conquer: Generals, and there are some interesting mods available. This title is two years old, and at RADEN and C&CDEN they're still getting new maps and mods for the game.
I have that game, too, and enjoy it quite a bit. Mods in games can be awesome, but I was referring to those who would mod their systems' hardware.

Says who? The courts have already ruled in favor of DRM-encrypted media.

Your only "right" is not to purchase DRM-encryped media. It's the court of public opinion that will judge Sony. And, if there's one thing you can count on, it's the ambivilance of the American people when they're being bilked, if we can get entertainment out of it.

Of course, there isn't anything (or anyone) saying that Sony will actually implement this in the PS3. It's presumed because of the copyright.

Even if they don't implement it in the PS3, the fact that they've gone so far as to copyright this leads one to assume that it will be implemented at some point in some format. Not very specific I know, but still. I can't think of any venue where this would be acceptable for the consumer.
