Although I consider myself a social liberal and fiscal conservative, basically I want the gov't out of my bedroom AND my wallet.

However, the right wing extremists are always at an advantage because they take positions of we want low taxes, we need protection, we are being patriotic by trying to protect ourselves, etc, etc, etc... AND if you prove them wrong or show them their logic is flawed, they get all shrill. Yecchh.

What they don't realize is that an effective argument/debate allows each person to understand the other person's point of view. Not blindly stick to one's position regardless of how stupid it is. There are people who do this on both sides of the political aisle, but they seem to excel at it on the 'right'.
