| Lover AND a Fighter | OK, we have in-house here at work RedHat Linux Advanced Server Rel 2.1. Anyway, our users are having a hell of a time with passwords. They are getting messages like "the password you are trying to use is a dictionary word" or "your password is too simple" (that password was actually BufordTJ pretty simple, eh?) All we want is for these little "safe guards" to be disabled. Any suggestions? Basically, I'm Linux illiterate & I've found no help from deja.com, though I may not be looking correctly.

| Astro-Monkey | Try inserting the password again. On my distro, the built in warnings are FYI warnings on password insecurity. Settings are in the /etc/ directory. I'm not sure which one would control this (and RH probably has a couple that I don't have). Also, Linux ISO and Linux Questions are two good places to look for help (Linux ISO has a forum and Linux Questions requires you to register to search).

| Lover AND a Fighter | Thanx... I found this link through one of the forums sites http://www.patchtechs.com/mirror/lnag/lnag...l#pass_security but the linuxconf utility isn't on our server, which from what I read in this article is what I'm looking for. Any other suggestions? FYI - I'm such a Linux noob that I just learned what the "vi" command does.

:w saves :q quits :wq saves and quits I believe :sav is a 'save as'. Try vim. Or, if you feel like slumming it, try emacs. Both of them have more of a GUI.
