How about a platform for playing World of Warcraft?

As a media consumption device, I feel like the iPad is excellent. But that doesn't change the fact that I still wish it was more of a replacement for a laptop.
Why?

For tasks that require heavy horsepower and fine manipulation, one would often find the screen size of an iPad insufficient, anyway.

I'm glad Apple focused on fulfilling a narrow yet widespread set of needs well rather than trying to make their device appeal to every small niche, an enterprise that would invite failure through overreach.

Edit: I imagine more capabilities will be added to touch-screen tablets after they've been honed as media consumption devices.

I'm just impatient for the day when I no longer need to use a mouse or keyboard.

That day will never come. You'll never be able to touch type on a flat screen.

Not necessarily. A screen that produces electric fields as needed to stimulate nerves might be able to emulate a touch keyboard, for example.

The Mass Effect computer games posit another possible approach which they call Haptic Adaptive Interface:

Quote:
Advances in computing have done away with traditional input devices like keyboards. Instead, modern input peripherals are usually holographically displayed in front of the user at a height and angle for ergonomic ease. Machines that use this interface detect a user through a microframe chip in the user's glove that "keys in" to the computer. Once a user is accepted, motion accelerometers in the user's gloves match his hands' location with that of a proportionate but smaller "mirror" set of controls inside the computer itself. As the user presses against the holographic field, force-feedback in the glove kicks in, giving a slight resistance. A person can feel his way though using a touch-screen that isn't actually there. A simple toggle switch on the back of the hands allows the glove to be turned off when not in use.

Haptic interfaces have become so common that some individuals undergo cybernetic enhancement surgery to have the accelerometers implanted in their fingertips. "Going bareskin" is the sign of a committed computer user who no longer has to fuss with putting on gloves or cleaning them with alcohol wipes to get rid of the clammy-hand smell.
"Force feedback gloves" would also be conceivable for touch screens.

I agree with Jason on this one. One of Apple's strengths is that they've pretty much always known what they're good at, and focused on improving that as opposed to MS who tries to do everything and compete with everyone.

In fact, MS is the perfect comparison. They try to do everything and they try full force to compete. Zune, Bing etc.. they're all examples of MS trying to jump into a market just because one of their competitors is succeeding at it. The issue is that MS just doesn't get it. They think that if they throw enough money at it it'll fix itself, whereas Google, Apple et all, understand that you need to focus on the product instead of just trying to keep up with the competition.

And Brikar, the iPad isn't really meant to be a replacement for a laptop. It would actually fall into the netbook category as far as I'm concerned. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer a full blown Tablet Mac (iTAB anyone?) but that's not really the market Apple was shooting for.

I know. But again, not changing the fact that that's what I want, regardless o how awesome the iPad is.

Apple is apparently working on technology to provide physical feedback for its touch screens.

Used a Blackberry Storm briefly. Sounds like they're trying to do something like it's keyboard. You actually felt the keys.

The keyboard worked a lot better than my iPhone's keyboard. Then again, what doesn't?
