New HTML applications

The level of intelligence needed to be a script-kiddy is about to be lowered to 0. :flush:

Idiots.

So it basically lets people hack into my computer... Way to go, Microsoft. Way. to. Go.

In the future, there is no such thing as privacy. I'm not sure if I completely understand the implications of this news, but it seems that the user would potentially be broadcasting the contents of their computer for anyone who was interested.

It looks like this is a Java applet on crack. My next computer will probably have to be Linux, there is no reason in the world to pay for an OS that invites trouble. Is Microsoft still in the product testing stage?

Presently, knowledge of programming is required to do anything that can damage a user's computer (okay, most anything. A new bug was announced for IE a few days ago that requires knowledge of HTTP).

Microsoft patented something that will allow HTML to act as programs. It'll be able to interact with your filesystem (reading passwords, erase files, etc.) just like any other virus you might accidentally download.

The thing is, HTML isn't terribly difficult. All it is is a bunch of tags used to describe text, and then interpreted by your browser. So, what Microsoft has is a way for (almost) anyone to write something that'll be able to interact with your PC.

The potential for abuse is staggering. And, as of right now, I can't really see any benefits.
