Default TREK TOS season 1

I picked up TOS season 1 at BestBuy while I was on vacation. Came back and started watching a couple of eps. Initial thoughts...

() Episodes are in broadcast order not production order. Probably not a big deal but the 3rd episode is the 2nd pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" with the retro uniforms and bridge.

() There are some scenes that I have never seen before, I presume edited out when TOS went into syndication

() Love the coming attractions of the episodes "Next week on ... Star Trek"

() The sound is pretty good but seems a bit uneven. The voices and music are fine, but the explosions seem really loud. I watched it on a 5.1 surround system.

() Packaging which I thought was crappy when I saw it on the internet, is actually pretty good and I much prefer it to the Babylon 5 slip cases.

() Picture appears to be exceptional, although while they cleaned up the picture, they did nothing to correct the poor effects of the time...matte lines are still clearly visible around the edges of the ship, etc...

() The transitions between episodes and features are cool. Everything appears on the helm console shared by Sulu and Chekov, when you select a feature, you zoom off through the view screen.

That's it for now, I'll update as I come up with thoughts.

I'm holding off for financial reasons, but will get them at the end of the month. I heard that the Amazon.com sets have 6 discs but the BestBuy sets have seven or eight discs, two of extras...

May have to send it to SmokingAstronaut for his birthday.

Yeah, some of the Best Buy sets have a bonus disc, you have to look closely at the packaging.

UPDATE:

Watching TOS in surround sound is unreal. It really brings something new to the episode. I also have to say that the issue with the audio levels is not in every episode but hte clarity of the audio is excellent. I am picking up background noise, even snips of dialog that I neve heard before. I think these DVD things are going to catch on...really, I do.

Man, I really want these things bad, but it's just too damn pricey. I wish they'd release a set without the expensive packaging, for those of us who don't care about the plastic carry case.
