Default My collection of Trek DVDs is almost complete!

So I got two more in the mail last night. The spec eds to 3 and 6. I already had 6, but I want all the spec eds.

So, now all I'm missing is TMP, FC, INS, and NEM. Now, I already have 5, but it's the standard version, so I need that s.e as well. Also, I have INS, and NEM, but same problem. Obviously because they haven't been released in se yet.

I'm so excited when I get dvds in the mail, Columbia house is the best shit in the world! I've also got all three Matrix dvds now! I bought those just to round off my order.

Those "Matrix" sequels were disappointing as hell. Great effects and action sequences, but DAMN did the story suck.

"The AniMatrix" however, is awesome. You should check that one out.

"SE" dvds are for the learning disabled, like Bean. Regular dvd's don;t have a running commentary to explain all the tricky plot points.

Seriously though, the SE or special editions are sometimes different cuts of the movie in question with scenes added or deleted, some special features etc....

Regular DVDs maybe just the movie and minimal extras.

"Special Edition" is essentially a marketing gimmick. Most movies come out on "special edition DVD" and often, that will be the ONLY edition. But say a movie comes out, and it's just the movie and no bonus features (commentary, trailers, documentaries, etc)... a year or so later, a company will often release a "special edition" dvd that, like Stag said, may have a different cut of a movie (director's cut, unrated edition, etc) and will have features like making-of documentaries.

For the "Star Trek" special editions, "The Motion Picture" has been re-edited, with new CGI special effects to complete shots that weren't finished when the movie originally debuted. "The Wrath of Khan" has a couple of extra scenes incorporated in, though nothing huge or major. "The Undiscovered Country" has two scenes that have been altered. Other than that, the movies are all the same (so far. I'm hoping "Nemesis" gets a new cut when its turn comes around). THe difference between the DVDs is that the special editions have commentaries and a second disc of behind-the-scenes stuff.

So.... really nothing that great abot them then huh. People just buy them just to say they have 'em.

Well, it depends - how interested you are in the movie and how it was made. It may also be a value issue. The "Star Trek" special editions are an amazing value compared to the original editions - 2 discs for (in most cases) LESS than the single-disc versions. If you care about seeing those bonus features, listening to the commentaries, then it's worth getting them. But the phrase "special edition" itself means very little. It's all about the DVD itself that matters.

You know, I've never been able to watch a movie with commentaries all the way ythrough, but I love bonus material, all that behind the scenes shit fascinates me, and extra scenes can do a lot for a film.

Extra scenes CAN do a lot... I don't know how many of you have seen the director's cut of "Daredevil", but it's amazing how much better a movie can get when you put the plot back into it.

The only thing that dissapoints me is that Generations is the only one so far to have alternate, or deleted scenes. I suppose Nemesis does as well actually...
