Default The music thread

Since I am a massive music junkie, I figured we should have a thread here where we can discuss, review and reccomend new CDs. Cause since about october I've been on a rampage with music and have bought on average 1 CD a week, I have plenty to say, hell I've bought 6 CDs in the last 10 days...

First off I'd really like to reccomend "Spreading the Disease" by Anthrax.

I bought this along with another Anthrax album and The World Needs a Hero by Megadeth, and this was the only one that really grabbed me on the first listen and has barely left my CD player. It's probably the first metal album I've ever bought where I've instantly dug all the songs after 2 listens, it's fucking fantastic, great riffs, great hooks and well executed all around. If you're not familiar with Anthrax (or at least the original line-up) they sound like Metallica, except with Iron Maiden type vocals (only not as overdone), and Joey Belladonna(vocals) is the best singer out of all the thrash bands. The album itself is really comparable to The Black Album IMO, since the songs are all fairly catchy, and aren't too heavy for the mainstream listener.

The only real downside is that when the album was made Anthrax was still an underground band on an indie label, and so the production isn't brilliant, but it's satisfactory, kinda like Ride The Lightning, the only real fault being that the master volume isn't quite as high as I'd like it to be. The advantages of Megadeth's Remix and Remaster collection is apparent.

I really haven't listened to much this year, except Velvet Revolver's "Contraband," which is pretty much on constant repeat in my car. I love that album. The one I got had the "Best Buy bonus disc" with covers of "Surrender," "No More No More" and "Negative Creep" on it, which is pretty cool.

Wow, I haven't purchased a cd since St Anger, and before that I can't remember the last one...

OK...the first CDs I bought off Amazon were Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning, which I bought on a whim and basically got me into Metallica, so I bought a few more, then decided to buy Megadeth etc. and a few non metal CDs, but since those first two purchases I've been buying more and more. Since I still can't get broadband and the filesharing nets have been dying slowly and the music i like is hard to find anyway (plus the fact that good music is deserves to be payed for IMO), I've just been buying more and more CDs, If my car stereo wasn't mp3 my car interior would just be a steering wheel, a seat and a massive pile of CDs

Hehe. I tend to buy a lot of soundtracks, which is admittedly, quite dorky. My most recent purchases, as I thought about more than just Velvet Revolver, were the 2-disc John Williams' "Superman", "Angel: Live Fast, Die Never" (which I bought from Amazon UK a month ago, and won't be released in the states until sometime in May), and "Alias: Season 2", with "Star Wars: Episode 3" coming out next week. I also have an iTunes account, so I purchase a single track here or there if I don't want a whole album. Last night I got a track from the "Stargate SG-1" soundtrack and a couple of Van Halen songs.

Heh, SG-1's soundtrack's more or less the same in every episode so you're not missing much....

Yeah, and most of the soundtracks from the earlier episodes were just re-edited portions of the score from the movie, which is why I only bothered with one track instead of the whole album.

Yeah, one of the problems with Stargate really is that they're totally happy in their own little rut, Atlantis has some new elements (i.e. rather unconventional characters) but it suffers from the same problem that most of the creative staff has been more or lessexactly the same for nearly 10 years. Directors, Writers, Art Dept and the Music has seen very little variation. Every episode is directed by Martin Wood or Peter DeLuise - the latter being a motormouth who ruins the commentary, and the music is by Joel Goldsmith EVERY time, and overall Statgate always feels like they're trying to save money.
