![]() | Do you guys want the full-fledged, spoiler-ridden review of "Serenity" or shall I just be vague and frustratingly suggestive to let you stew for five months?

![]() | What it's about is the Alliance trying harsh, radical new tactics to find River, and Mal and the others having to decide whether or not to protect her and Simon, or cut them loose for their own safety as River's psychoses get more and more dangerous. Plus, badass fucking Reavers.

| Religious Fanatic | Is there room for a sequel? I've only seen the first 7 episodes and I'm already pissed that it got cancelled. There was some potential for some great storylines, and i kinda think it's be cool to see a civil war or something, mainly cause I think the opening scene of the pilot NEEDS to be followed up on. Is it just me or does anyone else think the expression Mal has when sees the alliance bombers was priceless?

![]() | Plenty of room for a sequel. In fact the movie damn-near taunts you with it. As for following up on the opening scene of the pilot, that's actually Mal's character arc for the movie. Shepherd Book tells him he'll never beat the Operative because the Operative is a "believer". It's much BIGGER than any episode of the series ever was. Throughout the series, the Serenity crew were definitely small-time crooks, living on the fringe, staying out of the Alliance's way. Which was good. But by the end of this movie, they're big damn heroes, which makes it feel much more like a movie than simply an episode blown up to 2.35 widescreen and a $40 million dollar budget. So it's a dang good movie... save for one thing that just bothers the FUCK out of me.

![]() | Also, Sean Maher ("Simon") and Morena Baccarin ("Inara") were in the theatre with us and stuck around afterward to sign autographs and take pictures. Before the movie was a special introduction by Joss Whedon telling us that the movie wasn't possible without the support of the fans, so it is really our movie and that if it sucked it was our fault and we should keep quiet about it, but if it was good then we should tell everyone we've ever met in our entire lives.

| Religious Fanatic | Fingers crossed it's a box office success then, so we do get a sequel, and another sequel, and another one.... I should be getting to see the rest of the season next week, and I'll probably buy it when I get my car fixed.

![]() | I think it'll be a box office success. It had a pretty small budget (around $40 million), and with the amount of excitement being generated from these screenings, it'll probably take half that in its opening weekend. Will it be a critical success? I don't know. The fans will certainly eat it up. But there are definitely problems bringing in the new ones. While the movie does a good job setting up the general plot (that is, the deal with River), it doesn't do a good job explaining just what everyone ELSE'S deal is. How did they all come together on this ship? Why are certain characters where they are when the movie starts? It doesn't even really go into detail about why River and Simon are on Serenity at all, just a throwaway line from Mal about them being passengers. Those are the biggest obstacles for an "outside" audience to overcome. The movie is certainly enjoyable enough - it has a good pace, it's hilariously funny, and the action, especially at the end, is pretty intense. But I think it'll be much harder for people who haven't seen the show to truly "get" it. Of course, what'll happen is that people will see it, enjoy it, and then go get the DVDs of the TV series. Sales of the DVD set spiked considerably at amazon.com after the trailer was released. I would personally love it to come back as a show rather than a series of movie sequels. Imagine a Sci-Fi Channel line up of "Stargate," "Firefly" and "Battlestar Galactica".

| Religious Fanatic | Hopefully, but doesn't fox own the rights to the franchise?
