![]() | I found that I can get the first six seasons through the local library. "Children of the Gods" - OK. Kinda lost me near the end. Teal'c's betrayal of Aphophis seemed really lame. I could see that he was upset about Apophis killing the women his "queen" found unfit for a host, but it didn't seem like he was that upset, and who were these "others" who made the same claim as O'Neill that he could save the innocents? I guess that after a lifetime of servitude to Apophis, it just seemed like he turned around far too quickly for my tastes. "The Enemy Within" - A pretty good follow-up episode, though I think I'd have liked Kowalski to stick around longer. His death was pretty cool, though. I'm a bit unclear as to how the Goa'uld managed it's deception - how does it live without the body wrapped around the spinal cord?"Emancipation" - Meh. Watching Carter kick the Mongol chief's ass was fun, but the cheesiness of the acting and production design kept this one down a bit. That's a problem I've had with a lot of episodes of this show, though. "The Broca Divide" - I love the concept here, that the wild people live on the dark side of the planet and the civilized ones stay in the light. More cheesy costumes, but I could live with it better because of the stronger script and concept. "The First Commandment" - Another awesome concept. I'd have liked more about Carter's previous relationship. It seemed like that was just sort of thrown in there and then not really explored. I think it'd have been great if O'Neill and Carter had been tossed into the Stargate, and the people of the planet believing they were dead... only to have the Gate open back up again and spit them back out from Earth. That'd have been funny. "Cold Lazarus" - I really liked how this one explored the destruction of O'Neill's family. It's also a nice twist that the "evil double" wasn't actually an evil double at all. "Brief Candle" - Another batch of lame costumes, but a good script to prop it up. I thought Anderson did a good job playing an older version of O'Neill. I was heavily reminded of McCoy's cameo appearance in the first TNG episode. "Thor's Hammer" - The Unas is a badass costume, but I wish James Earl Jones had had better dialogue material to work with. The dialogue just didnt' fit with the very menacing physical presence this thing had. I also like that Sha're and Scara have not been forgotten, though the choice at the end of whether or not to destroy the Hammer, I think should have been a larger part of the episode. Too much of it was spent repeating the same confrontation between O'Neill and Teal'c and the Unas. So that's the first 2 discs. If I'd give the series a grade so far, it'd be a solid B. I've seen a couple of these episodes, like "The Enemy Within" and "Emancipation", and the first half of the pilot. But since most of my SG-1 viewing had happened on the occasional Monday night, I've missed most of the ones in between, and seen much of what I have out of order. It's good to see these older episodes, when the group dynamic was still in place, before Anderson started dropping back. Without him, the other three characters don't seem to gel as well. I'm hoping the new season corrects this when Browder joins up.

| Religious Fanatic | Stargate has always been a solid B series, until more recently when it's been getting shakier. That's why I have seasons 3-6 on DVD, it's consistent so I can watch almost every disk all the way through, the drawback being that so few eps really stand out, kinda like listening to Slayer. Regarding Teal'c's decision in COTG, You should try and see 5x02 "Threshold"

| Religious Fanatic | Nah, it's a good enough episode, I won't spoil the story, but there's a lot of Teal'c flashbacks in it from when he was still working for Apophis, and it kinda gives you the full picture.

![]() | "The Torment of Tantalus" - A great episode. I liked the concept of the man being there alone for 50 years. I wish more had been done, like I would have liked to have seen his life alone, rather than just hear short snippets of his journal. Especially when he started to fantacize about Katherine being there, I think that would've been really interesting. If this had been a two-part episode, I think it would have been really strong. "Bloodlines" - Not bad. My favorite part was probably Daniel destroying the Goa'uld larvae after Carter's objections. Obviously, the introduction of Bratac (sp?) is a big one. I liked his first interactions with Jack. But then... Jack's interactions are part of what make the show so hugely entertaining. "Fire and Water" - Meh. Kinda boring, though the idea that all this scary alien really wanted was to know whether or not his wife was still alive is a good one. The best scenes were when the SG-1 team is clearing out Daniel's apartment, or the gathering at Jack's house. "The Nox" - Here's a pretty good episode, but that ugly cheap production design monster rears its head once again. The Nox are pathetically silly looking, as is Apophis' stupid gold armor. But the Nox characters do manage to give a compelling performance as creature's totally disinterested in the threat to them by the Goa'uld. "Hathor" - Another decent episode with cheesy costuming. So many other things about this show are top-notch, but then they pull out these cheesy, dime-store costumes and you wonder if maybe they could sacrifice a few kewl CG effects in favor of some more money for the props department. However, after everything they've seen... if a woman in a weird costume shows up claiming to be an Egyptian god, why is their first thought that she's insane and not a Goa'uld?

![]() | "Cor-Ai" - An interesting look at Teal'c's feelings about his old life as a Jaffa. The whole thing seemed rather predictable, though, with the Jaffa coming in right at the end so Teal'c could prove his worth. But then, it's also rather inevitable - how else was he going to get through that young man's rage over the death of his father? The writers wrote themselves into a corner, and the only way out was a cliche. "Singularity" - The nastiness of the Goa'uld comes through subtly here, with a bomb implanted into the body of an innocent girl. Jack trying to describe a black hole to Teal'c is hilarious. "Enigma" - An interesting look at just how splintered our world is. Jack and the others rescue a group of alien survivors, only to get into a fight with another faction within our own government that wants to exploit the aliens' advanced technology. Wrapping the whole thing up around a budding romance between Carter and one of the aliens was kinda "meh", but the episode works well enough. "Tin Man" - Jack O'Neill meets Jack O'Neill. Priceless. "Solitudes" - Probably the best episode of this season yet. Having them stuck on Earth is a cool twist. But I have to wonder why Carter didn't try dialing any other addresses that she knew? Certainly going back to the Nox or any of the other friendly planets they've visited might've been an option, at the very least just to get O'Neill some medical attention. Still, the performances of the cast make this one stand out, and it's an interesting mystery to have solved.

![]() | "There but For the Grace of God" - Great episode. I'm a big fan of alternate universes, and this episode delivers. I love the expression on O'Neill's face when he realizes Teal'c won't betray Apophis because of what he did. "Politics" - What a way to blow all your momentum after a great first part of an arc... Jesus, a freakin' clip show. The final moments, when Kinsey reveals his true colors as a religious, overly-patriotic nutjob are cool, though. But honestly, clip show. Ugh. "Within the Serpent's Grasp" - And here we get back to the good stuff as SG-1 infiltrate's a Goa'uld ship headed for Earth. Skaara returns, as a Goa'uld, which is nice for Jack, though I'd like to see Daniel come across Sha're at some point. The episode feels like the first part of a season finale though. "Politics" shouldn't have happened, or should've happened much quicker to get to this part of the story. Overall, a nice season. Season 2 discs are on their way, so I'm looking forward to plowing through those, as well. But until they get here... "The Shield" Season 3!

| Religious Fanatic | Unfortunately, it's a Stargate tradition that the penultimate episode of each season is a clip show, though they've come in some interesting formats over the years, my favourite being season 6's "Disclosure".
