Default The fall 2005 TV season

New stuff
"Prison Break" - Fox, Mondays 9pm - Intriguing premise and plotting. Characters are fairly stiff, but the show's got some of that good old-fashioned cliffhanger drama audiences eat up. I'm there.

"Threshold" - CBS, Fridays 9pm - Blah through and through, but intriguing enough to try a second time.

"Invasion" - ABC - Aliens are using natural disasters to hide their invasion plans? I'm there.

"My Name is Earl" - NBC, Tuesdays 9pm - Jason Lee? I'm there. Add to that a genuinely intriguing premise - a bastard wins the lottery and discovers karma, and sets out to do nice things for all the people he's ever hurt. We'll see how long they can keep that gimmick up, though.

Old Stuff
"Lost" - ABC, Wednesdays 8pm - We're going into the hatch. Cliffhangers and mysteries galore, "Lost" is the place to be Wednesday nights.

"Veronica Mars" - UPN, Tuesdays 9pm - The new "Buffy". I watched the entire first season in two days. Imagine "The OC" minus the suck, smooshed with "Buffy" only with private investigators instead of demon fighters. Boom - one of the best shows of last season. And it's on UPN, oddly. This season has Alyson Hannigan returning and Charisma Carpenter coming on board... and even a guest spot by Joss Whedon. I'm there. About once a year, I rave to you guys about a new show. This year, it's Veronica Mars.

"Arrested Development" - Fox, Mondays 8pm - One of the funniest shows on television. Period. I'm there.

"Scrubs" - NBC, Tuesdays - See "Arrested Development" above.

"The Office" - NBC, Tuesdays - See "Scrubs" above.

"Family Guy" - Fox, Sundays 9pm - This new season isn't as amazing as previous ones, but this show is still kicking new episodes of "The Simpsons" right in the balls.

Old stuff I'm trying again but sucked really, really hard last year
"Alias" - ABC, Thursdays - Jesus this show went downhill fast. After two amazing seasons and a good third, Season 4 crashed and burned right in the middle of the season premiere. After that, a string of poorly executed and downright boring episodes were aired out of order... all the way on up to a season finale that jumped so high over the shark it hasn't come down yet. We'll see how Season 5 deals with Jennifer Garner's pregnancy and the idiotic twists introduced last year... as well as sweeping cast changes. Not looking good.

"Smallville" - WB, Thursdays - Another show that died in the course of a single episode. Character growth stalled and the show continued to grow more and more ridiculous as time went on. Now the producers are pulling out every stop they can in a desperate bid not to seem like theyr'e desperate to bring back the millions of viewers this show has drained in two seasons as it pulls an "Enterprise" and loses any real pretense of being a prequel.

"24" - Fox, Mondays - Jesus, where do I even start with this one? The recent fourth season was nominated for an Emmy for best drama. Yeah, and Scorned is the Nobel winner for medicine. Jesus Christ that was a downright god-awful year of television. After making much hooplah about a new cast, that entire new cast is summarily dismissed a third of the way through as a continuing parade of old characters returns to the fold in increasingly ridiculous manners. Left-field twists that bend and break believability at every turn pile on and pile on, all while feeble-minded viewers convince themselves that this is good television, and that "24" hasn't become an idiotic parody of itself.

"The Simpsons" - Fox, Sundays 8pm - This show only does two plots anymore: Homer does something stupid and has to fix his marriage, or Bart does something stupid and has to make up with Lisa. That's it. Let's face it, "The Simpsons" has been done for about 5 years now, if not more. Kill it. Kill it now.

I'm also adding:

"Bones" - Fox, Tuesdays 8pm - The pilot was somewhat uninspired, but interesting enough to watch a second time. The second episode was far superior, with funnier character interactions and a more interesting mystery to be solved. David Boreanaz gets to play it a bit looser than he got to on "Angel", which is OK but not mind-blowing so far. Kudos to Fox for this one.

"Supernatural" - WB, Tuesdays 9pm - The pilot for this one was great fun. A rather typical setup is fleshed out by good writing and good performances from the cast. The special effects and editing were quite effective, and there really aren't many horror shows out there to provide some creepy thrills. We'll see if the second episode can keep it up.

What about the extreme/in-my-face "reimagining" of THE NIGHT STALKER that should be ripping off MILLENIUM and polluting the airwaves soon?

I've wanted to check it out, but I keep forgetting that it's coming. I've seen no advertising for it whatsoever, and only one review from the futoncritic that labelled the pilot as "OK".
