![]() | This was a favorite show of mine when I was a kid. I mentioned it in the discussion about early Star Trek conventions in a reply to NX-47, and it got me to thinking, so I googled it. Cosmonaut may appreciate this link, and for those who have never seen this TV show, do try and check it out. I'd be curious to know what people who didn't grow up on it think of it. http://www.space1999.org/gallery/index.html |

![]() | Cool stuff. I remember Space:1999 well, and how plausible the models looked. Bulky, blocky, and utilitarian- just how space vehicles are today. And the moon dust blowing around when the Eagles took off was a very nice touch.

![]() | Yeah, SPACE:1999 is one of the unsung champions of 70s sci-fi. I think that some of the design elements from it can be seen in the ship interiors of ALIEN. The concept was cool for its time too. The moon blasted out of Earth's orbit by a nuclear accident on the moon, due to the fact that the moon had been turned into a nuclear waste dumping ground. No starship, just blind traveling on a satellite turned into a sort of comet. The moonbase was cool, I can't believe we don't have a facility on the moon today, the technology exists, The Eagles are still one of my favorite spacecraft designs. I'd like to see a semi-reboot, remake of this basic idea. |

![]() | yeah, suddenly in season two, they all had these jackets, the main room was brighter, and they added Maya to the cast. It was really good in the first season, and that's what I'd like to see. If it were rebooted, it couldn't be a moonbase, it would have to be an orbital station. the idea of the moon being blown out of earth's orbit was a stunning concept for its day though, and it seemed so plausible. What rocked about the concept of Space1999 was that they weren't traveling under their own power, they were prisoners on a moon torn from its orbit, and we never did find out what effect that had on the eco-system on earth. The Eagles were such a great spacecraft design. The communication devices were cool too, except that the picture on the screens were black and white, apparently they were too cheap in 1999 to use LCD technology LOL. The weapons were cool too, but you have to wonder why they had hand weapons on a moonbase. Even in that storyline, not everyone had access to space travel. But I suppose it was to ward off any space terrorists. That theme song, while it wasn't a VanHalen style guitar, it was very cool, so was the video montage that went with it. Also, I've often wondered if the cataclysm was culled from some Nostradamus prophecy. I remember September 13th 1999, I was working at an art and office supply store in midtown, and I told my supervisor what day it was and he knew exactly what I was referring to. Another thing that has bugged me about that date in recent years was that it was two years and two days off from the strike on the WTC by al queda. Too wierd. |

| It's me again | Didn't Al-Qaeda fly a salvaged Eagle into the Trade Center? Seriously though...love the Space:1999. I remember when I was younger having the hots for Sonia. Now I see the eps and I cringe at her. Oh well, she seemed exotice somehow at the time. In season 2 didn't they move main mission underground? Also, while the Eagles were cool, the Hawks were also quite nice as the attack craft, I think they were only in one epsidoe though. EDIT: Also, in its early concept stages, Space 1999 was supposed to be a sequel series to the Anderson's UFO with Ed Straker replaced by Koenig in the final versions.
