Default REVIEW: Gun (Gamecube/Playstation/XBOX/PC)

GUN, by Activision, for Gamecube, Playstation 3, XBOX 360, PC

This game is the future of gaming, I believe. It takes place in the untamed West of North America. It's kind of a FPS, but it has an added element to it, it feels like I'm playing a movie.

I've been playing it on the Gamecube, and I'm surprised at the amount of data they've crammed onto that little disc for this game. It's not too different from the style of storytelling that you might find in a game like Resident Evil, but the nice thing here is that there are no zombies slowly limping toward you, in this game you have cowboys on horseback shooting at you. The main character is a sort of Clint Eastwood type, and the story that is told during the course of the game is a real story. This game is very cinematic and I wish I were playing it on a giant plasma screen TV with Dolby surround sound.

The game itself has a definite goal at the end of it, and from start to finish, it's a little short. But there is a lot to explore, some cool unexpected surprises, there's even a little gambling that you must do in order to have money to buy essential items.

There's lots of blood in the game too. Hey, it's a cowboy game, everybody is shooting at everybody, blood is everywhere, and it's not glorified. The only things that are spectacular are the dynamite explosions. It's a very immersive experience, and it's cool not to be in a sci-fi/horror setting for once. I mean, I loved the original DOOM, and tons of the other FPS games, but hand-held plasma cannons are getting a bit passe now. I've got several six-guns, some rifles, a shotgun and a bow and arrow to complete my missions with.

Also, there's tons of swearing in this game. I shot someone in Dodge City, and just before he died, he said, "I just shit my pants!". One of the main villains was trying to find me in a cavern and he yelled from the distance, "Come out you pussy, fight like a man!" or something like that. There's also hookers in the game. I saw one guy humping a woman in Empire City while standing up. She had her dress on, but his pants were around his ankles, I had to shoot him too. What a way to go, huh?

The missions are pretty cool. Not all of them involve violence. There's a series of missions that involve helping a rancher keep his ranch together. I had to go out and bring back some rustled cattle and bring them back to the ranch, and there were some Mustangs that had been stolen, I had to bring them back too.

And the world that you explore is cool too. It's finite, but I'm still finding new areas that I didn't know existed. The canyons and the badlands hold many secrets.

This is another game that would be cool as a two player game, but sadly isn't one. I would love to ride around on horseback, searching for my buds at the outskirts of the Indian camp, sniping with my rifle from atop the bluffs... oh well, maybe someday.

This game is very fun if you're into something with a story and you like first person shooters. As an adult, I do sometimes get tired of the more "kiddie" games, even though I boast a collection of fighting Pokemon.

I'll have to buy it.

I'm ashamed to say I also have an army of Pokemon on my GBEmu.

Ok, I seriously have to disagree. I just beat this game last night, and I've only been playing it for 3 days. I would harldy call it the future of gaming... while it is enjoyable, it's pretty much an old west version of GTA 3 with a serious lack of content. The optional side missions are all pretty much the same.

The wanted posters involve you riding to the easily located waypoint on the map, fighting the fugitive and his generic lackies, and collecting a reward. The only variation I found to thiis is when you had to track down the bandit brothers. You have to kill one and subdue the other.

The Pony express missions were all a race against the clock, and the rancher missions... well yay, now I can herd cattle in my free time.

Once you've made it to Empire and beaten Hoodoo, there is really nowhere else on the map to go. All of the random citizens are virtually the same thing, completley useless to gameplay. You can even go on a killing spree within the city limits like GTA and when the town becomes sufficiently pissed off, they send a posse of yet again generic enemies after you. All of which are easily defeated.

I found the Indian hunter missions to be similar to the wanted poster missions, only with an animal who runs away instead of fighting you instead.

Now, all that being said, the game WAS enjoyable for the remarkably short time it took to beat it. The storyline is decent, and the dialogue in the cutscenes is excellent. The graphics are nothing revolutionary, but well done. The effects and music were also really well done.

Probably the best attribute in the game is the "Quickdraw" mode which is essentially a reworking of "bullet time" from Max Payne and the Matrix really does give you the feeling of a "showdown" in the old west.

All in all, like I said above, it's a GTA 3 clone set in the old west, unfortunatley Liberty City kept me entertained even without missions or goals for a good month or so. Gun left me bored in less than three days.

I think it's the future of gaming only in that it's very cinematic without being a zombie game. As zombie games go, Resident Evil 4 had very good AI. The AI in Gun is pretty good too.

There are two games coming out that I'm looking forward to, one of them is based on the movie The Warriors, and the other is based on The Godfather. I think that eventually, gaming will become much more immersive than it is today.

One thing that I didn't like about Gun and others like it is the fact that everyone has almost the same experience. Unlike some games where your character is your own creation, right down to how they look and their name, their strengths etc (i.e. Baldur's Gate).

The look of the game is awesome though. Could have been better in spots. I find myself wanting to go out beyond Dodge City where the invisible wall is.

Right now I'm stuck in the mine with that one eyed sonofabitch and he keeps throwing dynamite at me.

I'm looking forward to the Warriors game because some of the scenes were filmed in my neighborhood and near to where I currently work. It might be kind of fun to see structures I've been around all my life in a video game. At the opening of that movie, there is a massive gang rally in a playground at night, with the leader standing atop a wooden structure. That structure and that playground was my local playground as a kid, I wanna see what it looks like in the virtual world. Kinda funny considering that for New York City, that neighborhood has always been one of the more middle class family oriented neighborhoods, but they filmed Death Wish with Charles Bronson in the same area too.

P.S. there have never been gangs like that around here, that film was all fiction.

I'm quite tempted to rent Tomb Raider II (movie) for that same reason.

Forget about Gun. Buy Oblivion, and then say goodbye to your social life.
