| The Dude | ...all clumped into one. Firstly, I came across livemetallica.com, which is kinda nifty. Metallica sells concert recordings for a mere $10 (for MP3, $13 for FLAC files). I gave it a try with a concert from two weeks ago in Germany wherein Metallica celebrated the 20th anniversary of "Master of Puppets" by playing the entire album live. Metallica's best live recordings that I've heard remain the uber-amazing "Live Shit" album recorded in Mexico in the early 1990s. And, of course, S&M kicks a lot of ass. But this two hour show is pretty good, and it's cool to have a 10 minute version of "Disposable Heroes" and such, and there's a couple of tracks of Kirk doing solos which are cool. Secondly, I was making some playlists and ripping CDs and decided that now that I had every single Metallica album (except "Garage Inc") on my computer, it'd be fun to do a "best of/greatest hits" playlist. I tried to pick every "big" Metallica song, and also mix in some of my personal favorites that, as far as I know, didn't get much radio play. Here's the list: Hit the Lights The Four Horsemen Motorbreath Whiplash Seek and Destroy Ride the Lightning For Whom the Bell Tolls Fade to Black Creeping Death Fade to Black Call of the Ktulu (had to use the S&M version here) Master of Puppets (used S&M cuz of "Call of...") Battery The Thing That Should Not Be Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Disposable Heroes Leper Messiah Damage, Inc Blackened ...And Justice For All One Enter Sandman Sad But True The Unforgiven Don't Tread on Me Nothing Else Matters Ain't My Bitch Until It Sleeps King Nothing Hero of the Day Bleeding Me (S&M version, I like the guitar solo better) Mama Said (Yeah, that's right. I put this one on there. Love it. Sue me.) The Outlaw Torn The Memory Remains Devil's Dance The Unforgiven II Low Man's Lyric (This one, too. Deal with it.) No Leaf Clover Some Kind of Monster (Remix) Frantic St. Anger All in all, it comes to 4.2 hours and 41 songs. Thoughts? Changes you'd make? Want to rail on me for including "Mama Said" and "Low Man's Lyric"?

| The Awesome One | Low mans lyric I don't like, but I think Mama Said is one of the best songs from their new stuff. And despite you wanting to put every "big" Metallica song on there, I have forever forsaken Enter Sandman as a bloated, overplayed piece of crap. I love the riff, and the solo is great, but I've just heard it WAAAAAYYYYY beyond an acceptable amount of times. I'd add a couple though: Don't Tread On Me Fixxxer (I think this is one of my favourite Metallica songs ever) King Nothing No Leaf Clover (Another one of my top ten Metallica songs) Overall though, I like your list. I could definitley see it becoming a regular playlist for me. Well... if I wasn't hooked on GnR lately lol.

| Religious Fanatic | Struggle Within has to be on that list. A few friends of mine recently went to see them at Download, and apparantly they still kick ass live, they did the whole MOP album (which I'm gutted to've missed), and most exciting, they played some new material that according to my friends (who hate St.Anger too) rocks. Yay!

| The Awesome One | I saw them live in Ottawa on my 18th birthday. It was the Load tour and I'm telling you, I was completley dissapointed. James sounded almost like he was doing a spoken version to all the lyrics, the drums were WAYYYYYY off beat alot of the time, and I just didn't enjoy it.

![]() | Metallica has been a disappointment to me since they released AJFA. And the live show is the most important thing. Recording in the studio lets them take their time and get it all right. But on stage is where you expect to see a show. IMHO, Metallica have been faking it all since Cliff died. Cliff WAS Metallica, they had to beg him to be in the band, he was with another band called Trauma and they got him to join Metallica, and the rest is history. I don't care what anybody says, everything that the band has done since AJFA has been simply going through the motions. Comparing modern Metallica to the original Metallica is like comparing Enterprise to Star Trek (TOS). Today's overproduced Metallica stuff is phony. They're an aging rock band, the fucking Rolling Stones are far more genuine than Metallica will ever be. I wouldn't even piss on James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich if they were on fire. |
