| "It's a faaaake!" | I've just finished the Doom 3 engine first-person shooter Prey, and I've found it to be one of the best shooters in a while! Since Prey utilizes the Doom 3 engine, one would expect robust graphics from it. These the game delivers, presenting almost photorealistic characters and textures. But the art direction and level design convey beauty upon Prey. The environment actually looks like a marvelous spaceship. The enemies actually look like slimy aliens. The weapons actually look like extraterrestrial monstrosities. Calling these things beautiful might seem weird, but they are so in the sense of masterful art. Prey, however, does not just look gorgeous. It delivers novel gameplay: Gravity is malleable, perverting notions of up or down. Teleportation portals show glimpses of their destinations, and stepping through them is seamless; a player can be in one place and step through into a completely different area without interruption. Spirit walking allows a player to move outside his body to solve puzzles and remove obstacles. Also, in many places, a player can fly around in a shuttle, dogfighting with torpedoes and a tractor beam. (Why didn't the Star Trek Elite Force games offer anything that exciting?) All this services an immersive story that would eclipse Fox Mulder's wet dreams. My only qualm with the game is, it's too short! After less than eight hours of playing Prey, I had beaten it. Quality fills those hours to the brim, though, so complain I shall not. Fun and short is better than long and boring, anyway. (I am glaring at Doom 3.) Prey is the best shooter since Half-Life 2, and I heartily recommend it! Grade: A

![]() | Sounds good! I'll look for it. I played Doom3 a bit... the graphics were great, but I agree, the gameplay was... lacking.
