| The Awesome One | Anyone else here bother seeing it? I dloaded a decent copy. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it. So the first one wasn't that great, but I enjoyed it as a popcorn flick. The biggest reason I didn't like the first one was Doom. They picked the wrong guy to play the part, and the whole confrontation with him was kind of pointless, but I let it slide cause it was an origin story. I'm sad to say they repeated the error in the sequel. The basic story is that the surfer shows up on Earth an starts wreaking havoc in preparation for Galactus whom if you don't follow the comics, eats planets. So the first half of the story is spent trying to stop the Surfer. Then Doom gets involved. Totally pointless. He of course wants the Surfers powers for himself. Through some forced plot developments, he comes back (seemingly from the dead) and ends up working with the F4 to try and capture the Surfer. They do, and this leads to the US Army holding the Surfer and interrogating him. Doom of course double crosses everyone and steals the Surfers board (the source of his power) and takes off as Galactus approaches. The Surfer, who has developed and fondness for Sue Richards, is rescued by the F4 and a battle with Doom ensues in which Sue is killed by doom just as Galactus starts to make lunch of Earth. Johnny Storm absorbs the entire teams powers as a result of his contact with the Surfer, and manages to get Doom away from the board not to be seen again. The Surfer, moved by Sue having sacrificed herself for him takes up the board and kills Galactus and himself but not before healing Sue. Now, that's the plot in a nutshell. And I'm serious when I say that's really all there is to it. There's lots of little jokes and gags between the 4, almost too many, but essentially nothing else happens. The Surfer is the only redeeming quality to the movie. They managed to ace this character. The CGI was great, his voice was perfect, and his dialogue was somber and foreboding all at the same time. I found myself really feeling for the Surfer and his forced servitude. That's it though, the rest of the dialogue in the movie felt like it was written by a 16 year old. Doom flying around on the surfboard was as ridiculous as it sounds, and once again, he had no real purpose in the story. Galactus was a dissapointment as he was only represented by a massive "space cloud". This point I'm not to big on though, as I can't see how they could have had the classic Galactus as basically a 100 ft man eating planets and not have it look silly. All in all, a waste of time, but if you're a cmoic book movie fan, it's worth dowloading.
