Default HBO's "True Blood"

This show is another one that seemed to have a lot of potential that's actually just downright disappointing.

It's a really interesting premise - vampires trying to integrate themselves publicly into human society, a nice allegory and all - but it's entirely wasted on the stupid characters of this podunk hick town. The cast is okay, save for one glaring problem: the romantic lead, Bill, is absolutely awful. The actor looks and sounds utterly bored. I loved "Angel", but I'll readily admit David Boreanaz is not a fabulous actor - and he could do rings around this guy. He's so boring, it almost seems like he has actual disdain for the lines he's speaking, and he's SUPPOSED to be wooing Anna Paquin's character. It's a romance that's Anakin/Padme-bad, and it kills what's supposed to be a central storyline of the show.

Probably the only characters in the show I actually care for are the gay chef and Anna Paquin's best friend, Tara. And their screen-time is minimal. The show gives half-hearted attempts to show what's going on in the rest of the world through the characters watching TV shows - Bill Maher has a cameo in the pilot that does an amazing job setting up the premise in just a few seconds, and the second or third episode has a televised debate between a vampire rights activist and a televangelist. These glimpses just make me wish the show were centered somewhere else, and actually explore the world this show is set in.

Default Re: HBO's "True Blood"

The novels are much better, but the series seems to be picking up.
