Default Death Magnetic

So I've been listening to a lot of Metallica lately. I kind of lost interest in them for a while after Death Magnetic. Not that I don't love the album, I do, but I played it so much that I got tired of them.

So anyways, I've got Winamp going on random and I thought I had put only songs from Justice and Black in the list. Apparently I put All Nightmare Long in there too.

I'm completely and totally amazed at how seamlessly it goes with the other two albums. I went from Struggle Within, to All Nightmare Long, to Blackened and it just seemed like they could all be off the same album.

Anyone else have this experience yet?

No, but I do think that Judas Kiss was accidentally cut from the Black Album, and that That Was Just Your Life was off Justice. Strangely, I think All Nightmare Long is the track I'd say doesn't fit on any other album -to me it's like "What if St.Anger had been good?". The chunky drop-D riffing, Slayer-esque alternate-picked palm muting, and the more chromatic feel are a departure from their earlier stuff, IMO. It just has more of a groove to it compared to older songs that feel a bit more cut and dry and in key.

Well in fairness, I sort of agree with you. I'm not saying it sounds like it should be on one of the two albums, but it sounds kinda like a halfway point between Justice and Black.

It's got the chunky riffs like like the black album, but it's also got the crisp and clean cut sound of Justice. It's like Metallica from the Master/Justice era recorded a song from the Black album. Do you know what I'm trying to say?

It all depends on the songs, I suppose. At the moment, there's not much out there in terms of details - other than the game will support dual drum pedals and feature a mix of about 30 Metallica songs along with other artists like Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains, but no mention of which songs specifically.

Also, I hope there aren't any Death Magnetic songs on it, since they made a big to-do about releasing that album as DLC for Guitar Hero III and World Tour. They should just make sure that it's cross-compatible like it was for those games. On the opposite side of that, I hope it includes Metallica songs that were previously available in Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, namely "Battery," "One" and "Enter Sandman".

Ultimately, I wish Guitar Hero would take the Rock Band route - that is, treat the game as a platform. Instead of releasing standalone expansions, release the new songs as downloadable content that is integrated into the main game. The only benefit of a standalone Guitar Hero: Metallica is that the game will have character models of the band. So while my Rock Band library grows with over 200 songs accessible in a single game, for Guitar Hero, if I want to play Metallica I'll have to choose if I want to throw in World Tour for "Death Magnetic" and "Trapped Under Ice" or if I want to play Aerosmith, I have to throw in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, or what have you. I'd rather have a large library that I can scroll through and play whatever than have to put in an entirely new game.

I've been thinking the same thing, actually. I suppose that shuts out people who don't have their consoles connected to the web, but I imagine that's a minority anyway.

Yeah, I dunno. I think it's a lose-lose situation - If there aren't any DM songs on there, people who don't have them and want them will complain and if there are, people who have them already will complain.

I'm just happy that they decided to do it at all. I was kind of annoyed when they released Aerosmith.. Sure, they're a huge band, but nothing seemed to scream Guitar Hero more than Metallica.

You're right about the downloadable content though Brikar. It's be nice if you could start off with buying this game, but then had the ability to download further Metallica content if connected to the web.

And for people whos consoles aren't connected to the web, EB games, or some other game store would make a fortune if they were to collaborate with the publishers and come up with a way where you could go into the store, buy 5 or 10 songs and have them loaded on a USB drive or something to take home and load on your console. It wouldn't be that hard to accomplish really.. Have it setup so that you go in and have a reloadable thumb drive or something, hop on some sort of VPN at the store and download the songs you want onto the drive. Pay cash at the till.

Guitar Hero hasn't done this, but Rock Band has released two "Track Packs" on standalone discs that are just a bunch of the DLC songs, so you can buy SOME of them that way, but there's only those two discs so there's hundreds of songs that are still only available online. But yeah, Bean, that is a pretty fabulous idea.
