| The Dude | "Star Trek: Insurrection" - I'm gonna admit it; this is not a terrible movie. It has problems, for sure, but the hatred leveled toward it and "Nemesis" by the fandom is largely unjustified. There are far, FAR worse feature films out there. It is a bit hit and miss - some of the jokes fall flat, the action is rarely as impressive as it could or should be, and some of the visual effects are downright bad. But it's a moderately entertaining, light-hearted adventure for the Enterprise crew. Anyhow... the blu-ray transfer here is a bit disappointing after how good 'Generations' and 'First Contact' looked. There are a number of scenes that make the characters look rather more like wax figures (the DNR problem that the TOS films suffered from). The bad special effects look even worse here. Some of the makeup work on the Son'a is less impressive as well. There's also noticeable edge halos in a number of scenes throughout the movie. On the upside this is absolutely the best this film has ever looked. It's the most natural and film-like in terms of its color saturation and contrast, where previous home video releases, to me, looked very bright and flat. Here, it actually LOOKS like a movie, if that makes sense. But it's not as impressive as the transfers for the previous two movies. A bit of trivia: Michael Welch, the actor playing Data's child friend, grew up to play the young Jack O'Neill clone in SG-1's "Fragile Balance" episode.

![]() | "Star Trek: Nemesis" - This transfer is unlike the others... It's softer, but I think underwent less work than the others in terms of getting a transfer up to spec. There's more grain, but it's a natural grain that's not distracting or problematic in any way. But it doesn't seem as sharp as the previous films look. I don't know if it was shot softer (perhaps to help its aging cast) or what. There's also a bit more stylization in different scenes than in previous films, like Shinzon's flashbacks to Remus or the away mission on Kolarus III that can make judgment a bit more difficult. So there's less improvement from the standard DVD to this blu-ray, but its still a very good-looking transfer.

![]() | He's always looked a little strange in this movie, across every format. I wonder if they did something different with his makeup, or if it was because this movie was lit so differently than the others... I dunno.

| Religious Fanatic | I thought the make-up looked funny in all the TNG films after Generations, but maybe that was because as Brikar said their were lit differently. Specifically, FC was very darkly lit, which means that reflectivity (which gives the impression of moisture) would have shown up more prominently.
