| The Dude | One movie at a time: "Star Trek Generations" - Right off the bat, two things strike me: 1. Whoever designed the packaging for this set didn't take it very seriously. The quote on the back is Data's lame joke about a Ferengi in a gorilla suit, the picture of Data is from 'First Contact' and the outer box features an obviously Photoshopped image of the Enterprise-E battling the Klingon bird of prey from 'Generations'. 2. This is the darkest transfer I've ever seen for this movie. Whether that's because the black levels are astonishing or because it really IS just a darker transfer, I can't say as yet. Certainly, this movie has always been somewhat dark, in terms of its lighting scheme. I think that was partly to try and hide the cheapness of the Enterprise-D sets that were built for television and not feature films, which comes through rather obviously here in a couple scenes. Of course, this also means certain problems: Visual effects tend to suffer a bit. The Amargosa star collapsing looks particularly dated. A stock footage shot from the TNG show of the Enterprise during Picard's captain's log looks dull and flat. The film doesn't quite seem to suffer the same DNR problems as the TOS movies, whether that's because these films are newer or because the transfers were simply handled better, I can't say. What I can say is that this is the best this movie has ever looked. The detail at times is astonishing. If you've ever wanted to count the individual hairs on Patrick Stewart's head circa 1994, here's your chance. The audio is appropriately booming, too. The initial scenes aboard the Enterprise-B, the rumbling and explosions sound fantastic.

| Religious Fanatic | Can you re-edit this one to make it better?

| The Awesome One | Dude.. let him finish the last three projects he's started and abandoned first.

| Religious Fanatic | I think I could slightly improve TUC and Generations by making two new shots of a Bird of Prey exploding.

| The Awesome One | Yeah.. that's the only part of the effects in TUC that bothered me. The fact that they reused it in Generations seemed like adding insult to injury.

![]() | I never had a problem with the shot itself... but reusing it in 'Generations' was beyond lame.

| Religious Fanatic | I never liked the effect itself, I thought it was too fast and looked like someone blew up an airfix model. I also never liked the way it was cut into either film - doesn't mesh with the preceding shots.

![]() | "Star Trek: First Contact" - The best of the TNG films gets off to a great start. The transfer is excellent - flesh tones look more natural than I've ever seen them on home video, and the lighting seems a bit warmer in this transfer. Detail is excellent, which is great because, of all the TNG films, this one has the most texture in its production design. There are lots of areas with grates, small lights, tiny details, labels, signs... the 21st century costumes (notice the texture and fuzzies on Picard's long coat when he goes down to Earth, or how Cochrane's coat is warm and has damaged patches)... the complex Borg makeup and sets... The model and CGI work in the Borg cube battle at the beginning holds up extremely well - in fact, it looks (and sounds) amazing.
