![]() | 3x02 "The Enterprise Incident" - The Enterprise, under orders from a seemingly compromised Captain Kirk, enters Romulan space and is surrounded by enemy ships. Given one hour to surrender, the Romulan Commander beams Kirk and Spock over to negotiate. I don't know why this one isn't the season opener, since "Spock's Brain" is a completely fucking retarded hour of television. Still, while not among the series' best, "The Enterprise Incident" is a worthy entry. Visually, it looks about average compared to Season 2, with excellent color, very reasonable detail, and a good-looking sheen of natural film grain over it all. As usual, this show looks amazing, for a low-budget sci-fi production from the 1960s.

![]() | No, in fact, I'd say it's even worse in that you finally notice that the women they hired as guest stars in this episode aren't as good looking as we thought. "The Enterprise Incident", likewise, betrays the Romulan commander with a face caked in rather noticeable makeup. It's one of the dangers of seeing something in HD with a clarity one could argue it was never meant to have - but frankly, I think that makes it more interesting. I love being able to look at it and see the intricacies of production, to help understand what it was like making these things back then.

![]() | 3x03 "The Paradise Syndrome" - Kirk, suffering from amnesia, is mistaken for a god by a primitive race as Spock and the Enterprise attempt to deflect a massive asteroid from destroying the planet. This episode is pretty solid, despite a poor performance from Shatner. Visually, it looks okay. Previous episodes shot on location tended to look fantastic, but this one looks washed out and soft. Scenes on the Enterprise look great, however, especially closeups. 3x04 "And The Children Shall Lead" - The Enterprise picks up a group of children after their parents all commit suicide while on a scientific expedition. Soon after, the children begin to use their strange powers to take over the ship, threatening to spread the evil that killed their parents across the galaxy. This episode has a decent enough premise, but in execution it falters. Once again, Shatner goes nuts in a couple scenes, dragging the whole thing down, on top of some terrible production design. Visually, it all looks fine, though a couple shots early on look quite soft.

![]() | It is a pretty massive misfire. The fat energy alien wearing a mu-mu is just freaking awful, and the child actors are annoying at best (the asian kid seems to have crossed eyes).

![]() | 3x05 "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" - I'll say it right now: I think Diana Muldaur is a terrible actress. She's attractive, sure, but she's a friggin' wooden block. I never really cared for her as Pulaski on TNG, either. This episode is fairly well written, but is kind of rough around the edges. The premise, that a race of aliens is considered so ugly that looking upon them causes humans to go insane, is pretty excellent. Visually, the episode looks pretty good - detail on Muldaur's dress looks great. The entire episode takes place on the Enterprise, which, aside from the bridge, doesn't have a lot of textures to show off on blu-ray.

| The Dude | 3x06 "Spectre of the Gun" - This episode is completely ridiculous. Disembodied head aliens that float around in colored fog force the crew to re-enact the gunfight at the OK Corral. The production is surreal and silly as all hell, and that makes this episode completely fun from start to finish. It's not a real, dramatic sci-fi episode... it's just a crazy, wacked-out drug trip starring the cast of 'Star Trek'. What bothers me a bit, though, is that, at the beginning, Kirk pretty much forces himself on the aliens. They tell him to go away, and he says his mission is to develop peaceful contact "no matter the cost". What? That barely makes any sense whatsoever. But then, neither does the rest of this ridiculous episode. Oh well. Colors are bold, detail is strong, and grain is rarely an issue.
