![]() | Much like "24" a couple seasons ago, this was a show I'd wanted to watch, but never really got the chance to until the DVD set came out in September. Even then, I didn't really get much of a chance to watch the DVD set because my girlfriend INSISTED that we watch it together. This was a bad idea because she did student teaching this semester, which wore her out and she would fall asleep during episodes that we'd start at 11pm because she was doing work. But finally, over the break, I had my chance to see "Alias". Holy shit. Starting right on in the pilot, I was hooked to this show. Jennifer Garner, whom I'd only seen in "Daredevil," starts out the series beaten, bloodied, and handcuffed to a chair. Over the course of the next hour, we slowly learn who she is, and why she's in this particular predicament. Garner plays Sydney Bristow, a special agent like James Bond only hot for a secret branch of the CIA called "SD-6". She struggles with her double life - on the one hand, she's the best field officer SD-6 has, she can fight, she can shoot, she can hack into computer systems and circumvent the best security the world has to offer. On the other, she's a grad student in a committed relationship with a man named Danny. When Danny proposes to her, she realizes she'll never be able to keep lying to him all the time about her life, and she reveals her double nature to him. SD-6 of course, can't have this - and has Danny murdered. This is when Sydney finds out the truth - SD-6 is NOT the CIA, but is, in fact, one of the most elaborate scams ever created. SD-6 is a terrorist cell of the evil Alliance. So Syd goes to the real CIA and becomes a double agent. That sounds like a lot, but there's just so much more to this show. It's amazing. The characters are excellent, and very diverse. The evil people in this show are truly, truly evil, and I'm surprised with some of the things the producers are able to get away with. "Enterprise" wants to be dark and edgy - they should watch this show to see how to do that. "Enterprise" wants to string viewers into coming to watch the next episode - they should damn well watch this show to see how to do that. Practically every episode ends on some amazing cliffhanger that immediately makes you want to see the next episode RIGHT AWAY. I'm very, very thankful for having it on DVD. After I watched the entire first season in about three days, I immediately ran out to buy the second season on DVD. It's that good. Trust me. My only problem now is that the third season isn't out on DVD. In fact, it's only midway through its first run. I can't fuckin' wait to see it. ![]()
