![]() | Anyone read the new DUNE prequels? I just finished "The Butlerian Jihad" and I've started "The Machine Crusade". They're both excellent. It's definitely a well-done prequel. We see the beginnings of the Fremen on Arrakis, the discovery of the Spice, the origins of the feud between the Atreides and the Harkonnen, and we learn why, in the original DUNE, Earth is long-gone and out of mind. It's interesting that the roles of the Harkonnen and the Atreides were originally reversed - Vorian Atreides is considered a traitor, his father is a warlord for the "Synchronized Worlds," the empire controlled by the evil AI, Omnius. And Xavier Harkonnen is the hero of the free human worlds. I recommend these books if you've got the time. But they're long - about 700 pages each (hardcover) with fairly small print.
