A lot of places around here have temporarily stopped using tomatoes. I have no idea what this will do to Taco Bell...

Yeah, it seems like a bit of an overreaction, IMO, when I see a sign that says, "Wendy's tomatoes have not been shown to carry salmonella, but we won't serve them, anyway."

I had a tomato on a cheeseburger from a local meat market grill stand yesterday, and I'm not ill. To be fair, though, the tomatoes at a local meat market are likely locally grown by people with enormous backyards and a fondness for gardening.

My aged father worked for many years with the health dept on the Tex/Mex border. He said the Mexican farmers fertilize their crops with raw sewage, so it's no wonder there aren't more and worse diseases being transmitted.

I went to Kroger to pick up veggies to grill and all the tomatoes had "grown in Mexico" stickers on them.

IMO; I think that all this "food contamination" business is just something the government cooks up so that they don't have to admit that there is a world-wide food shortage. I guess they don't want to start a panic or something but you know, if stores and resturants would also start getting their veggies from local sorces we wouldn't have this kind of problem. Although I do believe there is a problem with bacteria on some foods that might make a person sick, I don't believe it's as problematic as it's portrayed in the media, after-all out of the (what?)50 people who got sick and the 9 people who actually died, what do we know about their medical history? Their enviroment? Their eating, smoking, dirking habbits? Nothing! There could have been so many other factors involed with why they got sick/died, but we're talking about a handfull of people within millions. Yes, people got sick and yes, unfortunatally a few died, but the government, through the device of the media is exploiting it.
First it was the tomatoes, now beef... it'll be lettuce next.

Yeah, I kinda agree with that. I also think some of this is due to our being too accustomed to drugs and sterile environments. There's a certain point where we're just destroying our immune system.

There has been a documented rise in pet allergies since parents have become insane on the subject of sterility and have kept their kids away from animals.

Yep. Though I've never actually met anyone with a pet allergy before. Sterility's also been identified as a cause for children developing asthma and eczema.

Sterility's a good idea in medical situations for obvious reasons, and food hygiene in restaurants is a good idea due to the sheer volume of food people prepare. At the end of the day though, people were designed to live in unsterile environments with the presence of bacteria, and we're actually dependent on some types I believe, so some restraint must be shown.
